The day begins in Williamsport at the Williamsport Visitors Center.

The stage concludes across the Potomac from Harpers Ferry at the Appalachian Trail & C&O Canal Towpath.

The Potomac could have made our lives a lot easier by moving in a straight line. Instead, though, the route today is the squiggliest of lines, moving in every direction possible at some point in its general progression southward. This is a remarkably quiet stretch on the C&O; the closest you'll get to a proper town along the ride is Shepherdstown, which sits across the river on the West Virginia side. If you opted to detour inland to Sharpsburg for a visit to the Antietam National Battlefield, I couldn't blame you.

Continuing south along the C&O, though, you'll continue to see little beyond turtles, herons, and empty campgrounds, until Harpers Ferry finally comes into view, also perched on the West Virginia side, on a penunsula jutting into the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. Be sure to save at least a little energy to make a proper visit to this great historic site.

Support: A support vehicle will be accessible at Dam 4 (14.9 miles), Shepherdstown (26.5 miles), and Towpath Milepost 64-65 (34.6 miles). Water will be available to top off bottles, along with all necessary participant gear. Food may be available in Shepherdstown, with a short detour.

Take Heed: Taps at the C&O campgrounds are likely to be shut off for the season.
