The day begins at the Fox River Park in Ottawa.

The stage concludes at City Square in Joliet.

It's another fabulous day following the I&M as it leads eastward across Illinois. As happy as one can be, staying canalside for mile after mile, be sure to pause in each town along the way, as these historic canal towns have a lot to offer. Head north along the Main Street in Marseilles, and then pick your pleasure in Seneca--both north and south have their virtues. Morris is the biggest town of them all, but its historic center is no less quaint for the scale. If you're not in the mood for a full meal, it's still hard to pass up a detour to Morris Bakery for a quick bite.

After Morris, the canal bends northeastward as you move into a longer rural stretch, so this is another marvelous area to keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. The trail converges upon the Illinois River, wraps southward around McKinley Woods and then enters the home stretch, resuming a northward progression along the Des Plaines River. You'll pass through Channahon State Park--and neighboring Channahon, and then finally, when the I&M concludes, transition onto city streets leading over the Des Plaines River and into the center of Joliet.
