The day begins at the Spring Valley Veterans Memorial.

The stage concludes at the Fox River Park in Ottawa.

It's an admittedly maddening start to the day, heading north only to turn right back around, traveling southeast onto Illinois Route 6, but this avoids a particularly dicey part of the highway. You're still stuck with the highway for the next chunk, but before Peru the ADT veers away from it, never to return over the remainder of this stage. 

Backroads through an industrial area bring you from Peru to LaSalle, at which point the ADT crosses the canal and joins the Illinois & Michigan Canal Trail. This is a great stretch, made even better by the preceding time spent on roads; keep your eyes open for birds and other wildlife along the way. North Utica offers a lovely little town center, well worth a quick detour, before pushing on to Ottawa.
