The day begins at Johnson Lake State Recreation Area.

The stage concludes at Fort Kearny State Historical Park.

Aside from some occasional short shifts north or south--including some initial maneuvering around Phillips Lake--this stage involves a steady eastward push through unceasingly rural areas. Sometimes following paved roads, sometimes firm dirt tracks, the ADT generally holds as closely to the south side of the river as it can get, though that's often not close enough to see. Still, this is a great section in which to let your imagination run wild, trying to picture what it might have been like to lumber through here in a wagon.

At day's end, your imagination will find further application at Fort Kearny. Alas, while a semblance of a structure survives today, it's a far cry from what pioneers might have seen. Nonetheless, there's something evocative about the site. Settle in and enjoy the quiet, before heading into the city of Kearney for a bite.
