Details:

The relay's last full day in California begins with a long, sustained ascent along the Western States Trail, climbing 2500 feet over 12 miles. Along the way, it passes through the Granite Chief Wilderness (hence, no bikes in this stage). After a short descent, offering a well-earned break, a second ascent begins, shorter and steeper, leading to the southern edge of Granite Chief Mountain. For a short time, the WST overlaps with the Pacific Crest Trail in this area. A descent leads into Olympic Valley and the Palisades Tahoe Ski Area, where it might be possible to grab a bite. One last--much shorter, much more modest--uphill remains, delivering us to the Truckee River Trail, which runs alongside Highway 89 downhill into Tahoe City.

Support: A support vehicle likely won't be accessible until Olympic Valley (22.8 miles), and then again at River Ranch (27.1 miles). Water will be available to top off bottles, along with all necessary participant gear. However, you should be prepared with enough water/food to carry you through for the first 23 miles.

Services: Vault toilets are accessible early on, at Ahart Campground (1.2 miles) and Talbot Campground (5 miles), but potable water isn't available at either point. The trail crosses a small stream at 14 miles, but there's no guarantee of what might be running in mid-summer. Otherwise, services will be available in Olympic Valley and again at River Ranch.
