Start time: 10am

Meet at Judge John Sutter Regional Shoreline Parking, right on the Oakland/Emeryville line. Note that, while this is a convenient location for drivers, it's not as friendly to those using public transportation. If you're in the latter category, consider joining us at Target, a couple miles east. Just please update us if that's your plan!

End Information:

Estimated arrival time: 3pm

We'll conclude the day on the edge of the UC Berkeley campus, at the corner of Bancroft and College Ave.

Details:

This urban walk takes the long way 'round, looping south and east through Oakland, before turning northward for a long stroll into Berkeley. A section along Lake Merritt stands out as the major highlight, though it will also be memorable to walk the full length of College Ave!

We'll have a planned break for 30 minutes in the area running from Oakland Public Library (4.8 miles) through Lake Merritt to Whole Foods (5.8 miles) to provide a chance for bathrooms and sustenance. Public restrooms are otherwise limited, so you might need to pop into a cafe if the need arises elsewhere along the way.

If you're curious about why July 4's stage concludes at South Beach Park on the San Francisco side while today's begins on the Oakland/Emeryville side, here's the reason: at 5:45am this morning, the Embarcadero Rowing Club is carrying the baton across the bay on a whaleboat, landing at Treasure Island. From there, a group of Hikanation veterans will carry the baton across the Bay Bridge, reenacting this memorable moment from 1980! We'll meet you all at Judge John Sutter Regional Shoreline Parking, ready for the walk onward.

Please note: while in East Bay Parks property at the beginning of the stage, if help is needed, you should first check in with ADTS staff for non-emergencies. For emergencies, or if you can't reach ADTS staff, you should contact EB Parks staff as opposed to calling 911: Emergency: 510-881-1121; Non-emergency: 510-881-1833. (You're welcome to call 911, of course, but EB Parks staffers will be able to identify your location and reach you sooner.)
