Following some tiring ups and downs over the preceding three days, we have a much easier walk today! After crossing the Golden Gate Bridge along the west side, we'll descend along the Battery East Trail to the waterfront and follow the San Francisco Bay Trail eastward. After looping through Great Meadow Park and walking across Fisherman's Wharf, we'll reach Pier 39...

Event: American Discovery 250 Relay Kick-Off Celebration - Pier 39 - 11am

Expect to spend roughly an hour at the pier, for some short presentations, the honoring of Jim Kern--a great American outdoorsman--and a group of Hikanation veterans, and a snack or two. We're grateful to folks at Pier 39 for being all-in on supporting the relay from very early on.

Update: Unfortunately, Pier 39 has been asked by the City of San Francisco to cancel all events on July 4. Concerns related to crowd size have resulted in some last-minute changes, and we've been caught up in the wash. The walk will proceed as planned and we'll still take a break at the pier. 

Around noon, we'll hit the road, continuing along the waterfront past the ferry building and wrapping up at South Beach, just north of Oracle Park.

Important: While water fountains will likely be accessible along the way, make sure you have enough water to get you through to Pier 39, just in case. Public restrooms are accessible on the south side of the bridge (1.8 miles), Crissy Field (3.4 miles), Pier 39 (6.2 miles), and in the Ferry Building (7.4 miles).

Even More Important - Have a Transportation Plan

The parking situation will be complicated. Because of the holiday, parking is restricted in both lots on the north-end of the Golden Gate Bridge. You will not be able to park at the bridge. Drop-off is possible, as rideshares and buses will be able to access the lot on the westside. The 120 bus runs here from the city and drops off on the eastside.

Aside from public transport, the tidiest (but not the cheapest) option might be to park near the endpoint and then take a rideshare from there to the bridge. You can reserve a spot in advance using Spot Hero or other services to ensure best price and access.
